Northeast Energy Link

Project Scope

The project’s concept of a major north-south DC transmission line is definite. The final project scope is being defined and modified based on emerging needs and opportunities, and the following two key project phases or alternatives are being evaluated:

  • 660-1,100 MW into the Boston area
  • Additional 1,100 MW into Connecticut

Supply Assumptions
Several thousand megawatts of clean and renewable energy generation is under development in northern Maine and eastern Canada. Much of this development is targeted for export to southern New England, including wind, hydro, and tidal resources. ISO-NE believes that the individual New England states will not be able to achieve self-sufficiency in meeting Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) and Regional Greenhouse Gas Intitative (RGGI) renewable requirements; therefore significant imports will be required. Sufficient generation capacity is projected to be available to fully utilize the line upon completion.

Project Participants
Emera and Bangor Hydro initiated and led the early development of the Northeast Energy Link Project. National Grid joined Emera and Bangor Hydro as a project partner in March of 2008. National Grid brings strong value to the project, especially with its extensive facilities and operations in southern New England. Spectra Energy is a participant in the project and brings significant expertise in underground linear projects, right-of-way, and permitting.
